Using LiftLens safely
LiftLens gives feedback on exercise technique from one phone camera. It is fitness coaching, not medical advice. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent injury or any medical condition. Its checks are estimates, and they can be wrong.
Before you start
- If you have a heart, lung, joint or other health condition, are pregnant, or are returning after an injury, surgery or a long break, talk to a doctor or physiotherapist before starting a strength programme.
- LiftLens is for people aged 16 and over.
While you train
- Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, faintness, shortness of breath or chest discomfort, and get medical advice.
- Your judgement comes first. LiftLens can't see the weight you lift, your breathing, what your vertebrae do (from the side it sees only the outline of your back), how tired you are or how you feel. A "Looks good" means only that the checks it could make looked good from that camera angle.
- Use the equipment's safety features: safety bars or pins, collars and a spotter for heavy lifts. The app doesn't replace any of them.
- Don't look at the screen mid-rep on heavy lifts. Keep your eyes where the lift needs them. You never need to: recording starts and stops on its own, and your report is waiting when you pick the phone up.
- Put the phone somewhere stable and out of the way. On a bench, a plate stack or the floor, away from the bar's path, where nobody trips over it and it can't be hit by plates or dropped weights.
- Choose a load you can control with good form. The app never suggests weights.
About the checks
- Only checks that suit your camera angle are made. The others are listed as "Not judged from this angle".
- Some things a phone camera cannot judge at all, such as where your weight sits in your feet or what the spine does inside a flat-looking outline. The app says so for each movement instead of guessing. Back rounding is judged only from the outline of the back, from the side.
